Wellness Quick Tip: Move your joints before breakfast

We we walk in man-made shoes on artificial surfaces, we sit to work, we sit to learn, we sit to be entertained, we often sit to travel. Our flexibility, circulation, and range of motion suffers, but if we can focus attention on our joint’s mechanical behavior, we can increase the comfort in our bodies.

In the morning, stand comfortably in your favorite space of your house with your knees slightly bent, your arms and wrist hanging loosely at your side, your shoulders dropped, your pelvis tucked under. Take a deep breath in using more of your belly, rather than the top of your chest. Exhale and let your body naturally correct itself into a relaxed posture. Do a Quick Scan: How do you feel?

Begin at your ankles and rotate them in both directions. Move up to your knees and rotate them in both directions. Next go to your hips and do wide circles. Travel to the shoulders, elbows, wrists, and neck. Moving your joints like this can help break nueromuscular patterns that keep your body locked into painful postures, increase circulation, and bring you into the present with calm and open awareness to start your day! You can do this while you wait for the car to heat up, your kids to finish eating breakfast, or a few moments while you’re getting dressed.
