Okay, it’s officially holiday season and cold weather is here to stay! I struggle with feeling motivated during long winter months; however, the more I think about it, the more okay I am with that. Here are some tips to make these next months great for you:
-
Go outside
Just being outside and walking or running or working in the yard will pick up that feel-good serotonin. Look up toward the sun and soak it in! We still need that Vitamin D even in the winter. If you’ll feel like you’re in a deep freezer by being outside, make sure to locate yourself near a window with sunlight each day. This can be at work, on the treadmill, or reading a book on the couch.
-
Hibernate
It’s okay, in fact it’s natural, to slow down in winter months. We’re bombarded with holiday parties and commitments in addition to our normally over-taxed days. Allow yourself to say “no” sometimes and just go home, sit on the couch, or go to bed early. Think bears and hibernating… makes sense, right?
-
Enjoy community
Holidays and the end of the year are a great time to reflect on the people we surround ourselves with. Whether it be friends, partners, family, or co-workers, think about the relationships you’ve got that feed you. Too often we pour ourselves into relationships that are draining and don’t give back. Spend time with people that nurture and grow with you. You might just find yourself smiling or laughing a bit more.
-
Exercise
While its important to slow down, it doesn’t mean “no exercise.” Winter exercise can be different that other seasons… maybe it’s walks, yoga, weight lifting as opposed to faster, outdoor exercise. You might not feel motivated, but the movement will keep you away from the winter blues and keep those muscles loose.
-
Eat seasonally
Slow cooked chilis, curries, and stews will warm your body during these coming months. Things like raw foods and ice cream add additional stress to your system since they are so cold. Make it easy on your body and roast veggies or make a soup.
